Sketch of the week 29 November 2019

This week’s #buildingdoodle sketch is by Paul Mitchell of architect Paul Mitchell & Co. He says: “Knights Manor in Dedham, Essex, is a fine example of a 16th-century merchant’s house, which was built in a period of wealth due to the local wool cloth industry. The grade ll*-listed building has an exposed timber frame [with side-girt] and red-brick chimneys of four octagonal stacks.

“It was a great subject to paint in sepia to show the dark clouds and bright sunshine contrasting on its elevations. I painted in a medium with implements that would have been familiar to the master mason/architect of the day.”
