Programme aims to tackle problem ahead of expected influx from downturn-struck Dubai

Abu Dhabi has begun a week-long crackdown on illegal construction practices.

The campaign is aimed at stopping unauthorised building jobs and illegal house conversions in the emirate. The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with Abu Dhabi's law enforcement agencies along with other government agencies.

It is part of the emirate's plan to get to grips with the problem ahead of an expected upsurge in work as people leave neighbouring Dubai for opportunities in Abu Dhabi.

Last year, Dubai launched a similar campaign which saw thousands of properties have their power and water disconnected because they were not complying with local laws.
