Quantity Surveyors will become redundant unless they find a new role, Sir John Egan said last week.

The BAA chief told honours degree students in quantity surveying at Westminster University that it was vital that construction followed the car industry’s example of using computer simulation and that this would have an impact on the role of QSs.

He said: “Designing a building on the Internet is currently a very time-consuming process. But as simulation is inevitably introduced, the QS will become redundant.

“But the industry needs integrators. The QS needs to know how every part of the construction process comes together, and to be able to spot waste and eliminate it.”
