Contractor confident of further growth in the utilities sector, after reporting strong half-year figures.

Contractor Alfred McAlpine is confident of achieving further growth in a recovering utilities market after recording a significant profit rise for the first half of the year.

The company reported a 27% rise in pre-tax profits to £15.9m for the six months ended 30 June. Turnover was £474.4m for the same period, a rise of 10%.

Alfred McAlpine chief executive Ian Grice said signs of recovery in the utilities sector would encourage further growth for the company in the second half. Grice said: “We are encouraged by the progress being made within Infrastructure Services [a division of the company] and by signs that market conditions in the utilities sector are slowly returning to more normal levels.”

Grice added: “The key strengths of our group and these encouraging market conditions give us confidence that we are on track to deliver our targeted growth for the full year and that we can produce sustained growth over the longer term.”
