Government spending puts plumbing group in strong sales position for 2005.

BSS Group has increased pre-tax profit by 42% to £34.5m for the year ended 31 March 2005. Turnover increased 12.6% to £746.5m.

The plumbers’ merchant said that government spending on health, education and social housing and a buoyant repair, maintenance and improvement market had underpinned the strong sales growth.

Chairman Peter Warry said public sector spending would continue to be healthy. He said: “Trading in the current financial year is encouraging. Sales in the first six weeks of the new financial year are strong and well ahead of the same period last year.”

BSS is set to make a number of managerial changes in the summer. Gavin Slark, currently managing director of Plumbing Trade Supplies, will be appointed group chief operating officer of BSS.

Frank Elkins, currently commercial director of BSS Industrial, will be promoted to managing director of that division. Kelvin Stevens, currently commercial director of F&P Wholesale, will be appointed managing director of that business.
