English Heritage says money is needed over next ten years

England’s cathedrals will require around £100m of repairs during the next decade, English Heritage claims.

The news comes despite a £250m spending programme since 1991. Much of the more pressing work was identified almost 20 years ago and has now been completed.

But English Heritage claims six of the country’s most famous cathedrals still need work. These include Canterbury, York, Salisbury, Chichester, Winchester and Lincoln.

Earlier this year, the group faced criticism after it scrapped an annual £3m reparation scheme for cathedrals following a government squeeze on funding.
