Up to 87 workers face losing jobs as manufacturer shuts Barrington plant in Cambridgeshire

Cement company Cemex has ceased manufacturing at its Barrington plant in Cambridgeshire.

Around 87 employees face redundancy after the company told workers this morning that production would cease immediately.

Gonzalo Galindo, president of Cemex UK, said: "Barrington cement plant has been producing cement for nearly 80 years, and it is with considerable regret that we are now making this proposal, which could lead to job losses and the closure of a chapter in Barrington's history.”

A senior industry source said: “The email came out this morning about the halting of activity and a probable closure. Another casualty of the downturn.”

Cemex is understood to be meeting trade union and employee representatives later today.
