The government has launched a regional drive to recruit members to its quality mark scheme, which aims to rid the industry of rogue traders.
The news comes as it emerged that only 500 contractors had signed up to the scheme.

The DTI was due to have announced this week that 765 firms were undergoing assessment to join the quality mark.

A report in January by consultant Atkins said 40,000-45,000 members would be needed before the scheme could be publicised to homeowners throughout the UK.

A DTI spokesperson said this publicity campaign could take place next year if enough builders joined.

The DTI has begun its recruitment drive in north-west England, and will target the North-east and London.

A government investment committee is considering funding for further regional recruitment drives. So far the government has spent £5m on the scheme.
