Exterior screens made from Accoya wood have been used to manufacture the exterior screens of the University of Florida’s entry into this year’s Solar Decathlon Europe 2010 event.

The design is based on a traditional “cracker house”, which were prevalent in late 19th century Florida.

It features a covered open porch with a breezeway corridor facing into the prevailing wind, which helps with cooling. The building uses a range of sustainable materials including Accoya wood, a sustainably-grown product that undergoes a non-toxic acetylation process to increase its dimensional stability and durability.
