Owen Luder's brutalist structure in Gateshead has been vacated ahead of demolition

The iconic Gateshead car park used in the film Get Carter is one step closer to being demolished.

The brutalist concrete structure designed by Owen Luder in 1962 was vacated on Monday. An announcement on the demolition date is expected within the next few weeks.

Tesco’s development branch, Spenhill, will build a supermarket, apartments and a cinema on the site.

Demolition was set to start in autumn last year but plans were delayed to allow the site’s market hall to trade during the Christmas period.

Some of Owen Luder's best known brutalist buildings have now been demolished including the Tricorn Centre in Portsmouth.
