Construction to start this week on Orkney Islands schools scheme

Galliford Try has reached contract close with Orkney Islands Council for its £58m Schools Investment Programme. In January the firm was appointed as preferred bidder on the scheme. Works will be carried out by Galliford Try’s subsidiary company Morrison.

The Scottish government will fund the project which will include work at four separate sites.

These are a new primary school in Stromness, a halls of residence at Papdale, new grammar school at Kirkwall including an arts theatre, and a new swimming pool and squash courts at the Pickaquoy Centre.

Construction begins this week on three of the four sites with work at Papdale commencing in 2012. Under the contract Morrison will provide building and grounds maintenance for a ten year period.

Greg Fitzgerald, chief executive of Galliford Try, said: “We are pleased to have been awarded this important contract with the Orkney Islands Council.

“We look forward to working closely with all the stakeholders to develop high quality facilities which will provide excellent benefits to the whole community.”
