Scheme by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios dates back to 2016
Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios’ designs for a series of Victorian-inspired mansion blocks on a brownfield site in Bath have been unanimously approved by the local council.
The practice, which is based in the city, was appointed by developer City & Country to draw up plans for the Bath Press site, alongside landscape architect Grant Associates.
Its proposals would see 220 homes built across six blocks on a podium on the western portion of the site, which lies within the boundaries of the city’s World Heritage Site.
The site has a complex planning history. Proposals to develop the site under the former owner, Aberdeen Standard Investments, were approved back in 2016. Demolition work followed but the scheme was not immediately built out due to viability issues.
Further applications were brought forward in 2020 and 2022, with one rejected and the other approved.
However, after City & Country purchased the site in 2024, it opted to press ahead with the 2016 permission for the eastern half of the site, with construction beginning last year.
The application approved last week by Bath and North East Somerset council supersedes the 2016 permission as it relates to the western half of the site.
Across the two phases, the scheme will deliver 366 new homes, of which 34 will be affordable.
The scheme will also include three commercial units and a tree-lined frontage onto Lower Bristol Road, as well as three children’s play areas and a pocket park.
The project team includes Stantec as structural engineer and Method Consulting as sustainability services engineer.
