Materials group Hanson will integrate concrete blocks specialist Thermalite into its Building Products UK division.

Building materials group Hanson has bought concrete blocks specialist Thermalite from Belgian rival Etex Group SA for £120m.

Thermalite and its 390-strong staff will be integrated into Hanson’s Building Products UK division, which expanded recently with the £65m purchase of Marshalls Clay Products in January.

Hanson chief executive Alan Murray said: “This acquisition is consistent with our successful strategy of growth through bolt-ons and further enhances our position in one of our core markets.”

David Szymanski, managing director of the building services division, added: “Thermalite is a natural fit with our existing block operations and we look forward to additional opportunities to develop additional production capacity in the UK market.”

Thermalite annual production is more than 1m cubic metres of aircrete blocks and it operates out of offices in Newbury, West Thurrock and Sutton Coldfield.
