The sports facility will be built regardless of whether London wins bid to host the Olympics.

A new hockey facility is to be built in Stratford regardless of whether London is successful in its bid for the 2012 Olympic games.

London mayor Ken Livingstone told IOC members that funding for the new hockey facility had been agreed and work would begin soon.

The hockey centre will be built in the Olympic Park next door to Stratford. A velodrome and aquatic centre have already been earmarked for the site and will be ready by 2008.
