Manchester developer Dandara has gained planning approval for a 44-storey block of 990 flats that will become Salford's tallest residential building.

Architect Sheppard Robson designed the 125 m Chapel Wharf scheme, which sits on a 1.8 ha brownfield plot and will include 652 flats in its first phase. A second phase of 438 flats also has outline planning approval. The open-plan flats will have what the developer calls a "Manhattan-style feel". Construction is likely to begin at the end of the summer, with completion of the first phase expected at the end of 2009.
