Game of musical chairs for top executives continues as managing director of Morgan subsidiary Stansell joins Mowlem to run southern division.
Mowlem has poached the managing director of one of Morgan Sindall’s businesses to head its southern building division.

Garvis Snook, managing director of Yeovil-based contractor Stansell, will start at the beginning of May after 15 years with Stansell. The news follows the sudden departure of Brian May, Mowlem’s managing director of building, who joined Laing last month as chief executive of the construction division.

May has been replaced by Steve Bowcott, promoted from director of performance to managing director.

Before May left, he had also been responsible for the southern division’s operations. Under the new structure, Snook will take over this role, with Bowcott in overall charge. Chris Randle stays on as head of northern building operations.

Snook is understood to have met Bowcott for the first time a fortnight ago to establish their responsibilities.

Morgan Sindall has not yet found a replacement for Snook. Stansell does about £70m of work in the South-west and the Channel Islands. It was taken over by Morgan Sindall in 1996.

Mowlem combined its three regional building divisions (North, South-east and South-west) in August of last year. They have a turnover of £600m. The move saw the departure of Stephen Hawkes, managing director of the London and South-east business.

  • Meanwhile, two firms have announced the appointment of non-executive directors.

Prowting has added Richard Fraser, former chief executive of Fairclough Homes, to its board. He will take over as chairman from Peter Prowting, who will retire in June and become “life president”. Also joining the board is David Cull, finance director of Evans Property Holdings. And contractor Birse has signed up a former banker with Lazard Brothers, Christopher Honeyborne.
