Mowlem is combining its three regional building businesses into a national division that will be headed by former northern division chief Brian May.

The new operation, which will pull together the North, South-east and South-west arms, will operate under one management team and will have a turnover of £600m.

May has already been in the position for two weeks, and is in the process of putting together full details of the restructuring.

He said the move was designed to provide a single platform for service delivery to national clients, to encourage the sharing of best practice and to ensure consistency of service to local customers.

“The previous set-up was good for the locality but made it harder to co-ordinate our activities,” he said.

May said no plans had been made to close any of the operation’s network of 30 offices, and that the volume of business carried out would not decline.

He admitted that there would be some redundancies as a result of the move, but added that they would be “very small numbers”. The new structure has already seen the departure of Stephen Hawkes, managing director of the London and South-east business, who left two weeks ago.
