Half a ton bronze and steel rings will be placed in the tree crowns

The Olympic Delivery Authority has selected ten giant trees to plant in the Olympic Park.

The first two, a Red Oak and a Silver Lime, were planted over the weekend with a third, a Common Ash, scheduled to arrive early in the new year.

Each tree, which grow up to 18m tall, will carry a bronze or steel ring weighing up to half a metric ton. The tree branches and ring will slowly fuse together over time.

The remaining seven trees will be planted in the park in legacy mode.
