Firms appointed to build exteriors for Albert Square set to reflect a ‘greater sense of the modern east end of London’

The Carters in Eastenders

Aecom, EC Harris and Overbury are part of a project team building new exterior sets for the BBC’s long-running soap Eastenders, Building can reveal.

The team – which also includes Jenkins Design and Ion Acoustics – are working up designs for a new Albert Square that will better reflect a “greater sense of the modern east end of London,” according to the BBC.

The existing set, which has been used since 1985, will be replaced. The new sets at Elstree Studios will be 20% larger at 9,000m2 and are due to open in 2018. Aecom confirmed its role as structural engineering, M&E, fire, security and CDMC consultant.

The BBC said it will procure a building contractor later this year.
