Greenpeace activists have continued their protest overnight at Kingsnorth power station, 18 have been arrested

Five Greenpeace protesters have occupied a Kent power station overnight as part of a campaign against a new coal-fired power station planned for the site.

Eighteen activists were arrested at Kingsnorth power station at Hoo in Kent, after they broke in to the site at dawn yesterday.

Some of the protesters chained themselves to equipment and abseiled down the station’s smokestack.

They want the prime minister to reject the E.ON’s plans for the site.

E.ON UK has said the plant is still operational, although there is a heavy police presence was visible around the site.

Five people scaled the 200 m smokestack on Monday, and spent the night painting Gordon Brown's name on it.

E.ON wants to build a plant on the Kingsnorth site that could supply electricity to 1.5 million homes.

Greenpeace has argued this will lead to more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and will set a precendent for more coal-fired power stations to be built in the future.

E.ON UK, said a thorough investigation into how the protesters got into the plant was under way.
