Contractors set to be told by end of year who has made it onto building framework
Offsite builder Reds10 is launching a modular hospital in-patient bedroom next week.
The full-scale prototype, complete with bedroom, ensuite and adjoining corridor, was commissioned by the New Hospital Programme (NHP) to mitigate risks in new hospital projects ahead of the first wave multi-billion roll out of the NHP.
This prototype allows the NHP to validate and verify the spatial requirements for the in-patient room and bathroom pod, along with the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing interfaces and adjacent corridor space.
The prototype is currently under review by ministers, the NHP, NHS, and other stakeholders, including public and patient voice forums. If approved, the prototype will serve as the standardised in-patient bedroom across the entire NHP.

Wave 1 schemes are set to begin construction between 2025 and 2030. These include hospitals that require attention due to reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete.
Reds10 said the prototype, which has been developed at the firm’s site at Driffield in East Yorkshire, aims to prevent complex and costly design changes at later stages.
The firm’s founder and chairman Paul Ruddock said: “We are excited to contribute by producing a modular solution for in-patient bedrooms that can expedite the delivery of the next generation of hospitals.”
Winners on the NHP are expected to emerge by the end of the year.
In all, 16 firms were shortlisted for the work earlier this summer to compete for places on a £37bn framework to deliver hospital schemes across England between 2025 and 2040.
