John Flanagan resigns from Foster and Partners to join rival architect Hamilton Associates.

The architect who headed Foster and Partners’ designs for the Sage Gateshead has quit the firm.

Jason Flanagan, one of the key partners at the practice, resigned last week in order to join rival architect Hamilton Associates. He had been at Foster’s for 15 years.

Flanagan had a key role on the Sage Gateshead, one of this year’s landmark schemes. The music venue, which lies on the banks of the Tyne, was the company’s first building for the performing arts.

Flanagan will now join two former Fosters men at Hamilton Associates. Robin Partington, who worked on the Commerzbank in Frankfurt and Swiss Re in London, is managing director of the practice, and John Silver joined the firm last year.

Foster and Partners restructured at the end of last year by splitting its staff into six groups under six senior partners: Andrew Miller, Nigel Dancey, Paul Kalkhoven, Mouzhan Majidi, Brandon Haw and Grant Brooker.
