Spectators fall several stories after concrete floor at Fonte Nova stadium in Salvador collapses

Eight football fans were killed at celebrations in Fonte Nova stadium in Salvador, Brazil, yesterday after the concrete floor of their seats gave way.

The spectators fell several stories through a hole in the concrete, after they started jumping on the seats in joy over the match’s result. Over 40 people were rushed to hospital.

The stadium was packed with some 60,000 spectators who watched the local team Bahia getting promoted to the second division after a 0-0 draw.

The stadium was closed after the accident, leaving authorities to establish the cause of the collapse. The stadium is said to be in need of repairs, being over 50 years old.

The city of Salvador is a candidate city to host football games during the 2012 football World Cup in 2014.
