Riba last night awarded the annual Stirling Prize to Haworth Tompkins’ Everyman Theatre in Liverpool, beating bookies’ favourite the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre for the LSE, by O’Donnell & Tuomey Architects.

Riba President Stephen Hodder described it as an exceptional new building that “struck the perfect balance between continuity and change” in order to become “a ground-breaking example of how to build a daring bold and highly sustainable large public building in a historic city centre.”

The judges said the new Everyman was “truly for every man, woman and child”, cleverly resolving the issues of context and scale architects grapple with every day.
