A £180m scheme to redevelop Barnsley's markets was signed by developer 1249 Regeneration (a joint venture between Wilson Bowden, Ashcroft Estates and the Guildhouse Group), Yorkshire Forward and Barnsley council last week.

The scheme, which was designed by architects CZWG and Holder Mathias, will include an indoor market, retail areas, a multiscreen cinema and 100 one- and two-bedroom apartments. The centrepiece of the "kasbah-themed" development will be a curved glazed roof over the outdoor market. Work will begin early next year. The project manager is Tropus; a contractor has yet to be appointed.
