Tarmac has completed the Tree House, a children’s unit at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport.

The project, designed by Chorley-based architect Gilling Dod, was featured in Building last year as an example of how defects can plague a project but it has now been completed to the satisfaction of its client.

The project team has conceded that there were “hiccups” because of personnel differences on site, but said these were ironed out by “positive and firm” management and “re-establishment of a team ethic”.

The team describes the project as a radical departure from established NHS procurement processes, as its main focus was on being user-friendly for children. Cox & Partners was project manager, Curtins was consulting engineer and Tozer Capita was QS.
