Staff see average salary rise to over £41k according the company's human capital report for 2008

Average pay at Laing O’Rourke in the UK rose 8% from £38,500 to £41,814 last year, according to the company’s Human Capital Report for 2008.

Across Europe, where it employs 5,102 people, the figure rose 8.6% from €59,300 (£46,621) to €62,976 (£49,508).

Meanwhile, in the Middle East, the average annual pay rose from £1,109 to £1,633.

Chairman and chief executive Ray O’Rourke said: “Our remuneration strategy remains focussed on upper quartile packages, reflecting consistency of approach and the realities of a competitive marketplace.”

The company randomly tested 1,098 staff at 99 sites for drug and alcohol use. A total of 119 failed, which was up slightly on 114 in the previous year. Cannabis and cocaine use were both up by 14%.
