A survey of more than 800 readers revealed that although most were saving for their retirement, they were pessimistic about the future. One in three expected to work beyond 65.

The industry has been responding to government warnings not to rely on employers or the state – nearly 40% of readers have a personal pension.

One in four has a final salary scheme and one in 10 belongs to a money purchase scheme.

Of those aged 16-24, one-third expected to retire before 60, though half said they had no form of pension provision yet.
