I read with interest the article on the plans by John Lewis Partnership and Waitrose to double their floor space in 10 years and their search for new firms to work with.

Tony Jacob, John Lewis’ head of construction management, said that working with his company was “fast, furious and high risk”.

The plans are welcome, but when the industry looks to such flagship companies and their projects for good practice, it must be of concern that listed among the contractors and consultants it uses are “planning supervisors” – a title and role that were superseded by that of the CDM coordinator on 6 April 2007. Perhaps a bit too fast and furious – and high risk?
