Ceremony recognises achievements of British firms, including E-stack for its innovative ventilation system

At the inaugural iAwards held to celebrate British achievements in science, technology and innovation, a new approach for ventilating buildings scooped one of the top prizes.




The awards are run by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and backed by BBC Two Dragon’s Den star James Caan.

In the ‘Places to live and work’ category sponsored by Building, which recognises achievements in low impact buildings and innovative functional design, E-stack scooped the top spot for its atrium ventilation system which recycles internal heat gains and can help reduce the energy consumption of commercial and residential buildings by up to 50%.

Other innovations recognised at the event, held at the Science Museum, included:

  • Infection minimising curtain hook, developed by Opal Contracts to help fight the risk of superbug infections in healthcare environments
  • Unilever R&D’s home water purification device that kills 100% of water-born bacteria and viruses
  • The Solargorilla, a solar powered device to charge power-hungry devices such as laptops
  • The PowerCube, developed by Diverse-Energy, which is a fuel cell based power solution for cellular telecoms towers that reduces polluting diesel generators.
