The new masterplan, first published last month, will entail a substantial reconfiguration of the site with courts being moved to the north of court number one to ease congestion in the middle of the site.

The number one court will be remodelled with a retractable roof, allowing uninterrupted play in all weather.

There will also be new hospitality areas replacing temporary facilities currently situated at the south of the grounds.

Kirsten Lees, partner at Grimshaw, said: “Maintaining the championships’ status as the premier tennis tournament in the world underpins the Wimbledon Master Plan. Our proposals strive to improve the quality of the experience for all and provide innovative and high quality solutions to meet the challenges posed by this beautiful but constrained site.”
