Major Contractors Group chairman Colin Busby issued a stout defence of PFI this week, in response to criticism by trade unions.
Unions at the TUC conference threatened strike action if a dispute with contractors over pay and conditions in upcoming health PFI schemes was not resolved.

Speaking to Building, Kier chief executive Busby said initial PFI projects had proved that the system worked in construction terms.

Busby said: "We are convinced that, when it comes to construction, PFI provides benefits far superior to traditional procurement methods."

Busby also said he believed that services run though the PFI would would show improvements.

He said: "Without PFI the whole system would be one of delay and frustration."
