Network Rail to manage job

Costain is set to carry out the £150m upgrade of the railway station servicing London’s second largest airport.

The Department for Transport has promised £150m of funding for the Gatwick Airport project which will see the station concourse double in size and two platforms widened to reduce overcrowding.

The scheme will also add five new lifts and eight escalators.

Work is expected to begin in early 2020 and be completed during 2022.

The renovation will be managed by Network Rail, in partnership with the DfT.

Gatwick Airport Ltd and Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership are co-funding the project, contributing another £37m and £10m respectively.

The project is part of Gatwick’s wider masterplan to upgrade the airport, which was consulted on earlier this year.

The airport has said it will publish a consultation response summary and final masterplan later this year.
