Scheme will see Blue Star House become 341-room hotel

Proposals by Derwent to turn a 1960s office block in Brixton into a hotel have been given the green light by Lambeth council.

The 11-storey Blue Star House at 234-244 Stockwell Road is described as having “a dated appearance which does not contribute positively to the area [and] is no longer suitable for modern office use for numerous reasons”.

Under proposals drawn up by Grid Architects, the building will be stripped back to its concrete frame, reclad with “a high-quality insulated façade, and converted into a mid-market hotel with rooms on the upper floors”.

Derwent wants the hotel to be open by late 2029

A part four, part five-storey extension will provide additional rooms and a roof-level space, Derwent added.

The hotel, which is opposite the Brixton Academy music venue, will run across 86,000sq ft and will feature 341 rooms. It will also include commercial and office space at the ground floor.

Derwent said it wants work to start in the middle of 2027 and finish in late 2029.

Others working on the scheme include project manager Astir, cost consultant Cast, M&E consultant Buro Happold, which is also working on sustainability, and planning consultant DP9. Structures consultant is IESIS.
