Scheme will be built in Changsha

Atkins has been appointed to design a development, featuring a 400m tall tower, in the central Chinese province of Hunan.

The skyscraper is designed to be the centrepiece of the Northstar Changsha Centre that will contain 406,000sq m of floorspace.

In addition to the tower, the waterfront scheme in the Hunan capital of Changsha also incorporates a regional convention centre, department stores, a five-star hotel and serviced apartments. The 400m tall tower would be one of the world’s tallest 30 buildings if it is built.

At the centre of the development, between the office tower and the convention centre, Atkins plans to create a civic plaza that will be connected to the surrounding buildings by vertical walkways.

Changsha Northstar Real Estate Development Company, which will be developing the centre on behalf of the local city government, has asked Atkins to design the entire scheme.

The centre’s tall buildings will feature vertical recesses running up the sides, which are designed to give them a more slender look. In addition, the tops of the towers will be ‘stepped’ to vary the skyline.
