Tidal Lagoon Power proposes three further lagoons in Wales, one in Somerset and one in Cumbria

The company behind the £850m planned Swansea bay tidal lagoon power scheme has unveiled plans to build five further tidal lagoons across the UK.

The five new planned tidal lagoons would be in Cardiff, Newport and Colwyn Bay in Wales; Bridgwater in Somerset and West Cumbria.

The lagoons work by capturing incoming and outgoing tides behind huge sea walls, then using the weight of the water to power turbines.

Developer Tidal Lagoon Power said the six lagoons could generate 8% of the UK’s electricity for a £30bn investment.

Last month the Swansea project hit a £200m funding goal neccessary for work to start on the project, following agreement with the government on a strike price to guarantee electricity prices for the project in January.
