BRE is converting a Victorian stable block into housing as part of a £2.7m project designed to demonstrate how the UK’s vast stock of old buildings can be brought up to modern environmental standards.

The block, which has a poor thermal performance, will be refurbished as a low carbon dwelling (right). EC Harris, Wates Living Space, PRP Architects, the Prince’s Foundation, English Heritage and the Housing Corporation are working on the project, which is due for completion by 2009.
