Holes in Northumberland harbour wall threaten large diesel tank

A Northumberland harbour and fun fair have been shut down following concerns over the safety of the sea wall.

The harbour at Amble was sealed off and the nearby fun fair evacuated after local police said the cracks which had appeared in the harbour wall had worsened, threatening a large diesel tank.

An operation has now begun to drain the tank containing oil used by fishing boats.

Supt Gordon Milward said: "The harbour master contacted us reporting concerns about the harbour wall.

"We closed off the area as a precaution and assisted other agencies in their efforts to contain the situation with the minimum of disruption to local people.

"There is no risk to any residents of Amble."
