Dutch giant's 15 contracts worth £113m take it to the head of the quarterly table.
Dutch firm HBG Construction pipped Kier to the top spot in the traditional contracts league in Building's quarterly survey of contracts won.

HBG picked up 15 contracts totalling £113m to claim first place in the three months to December. Last quarter's winner, John Laing, slipped back to number six.

Total work let in the traditional market slipped 17% to £820m in the final quarter of 1998.

Work in the management contracts league more than doubled in the quarter, with £1.2bn procured compared with £495m in the three months to September.

Bovis' £350m White City shopping centre contract took it to the top of this league.

Tarmac headed the design-and-build table, with £83m worth of contracts. John Laing's £45m put it second.

Total work let in this sector fell to £296m in the final quarter, compared with £416m in the third the quarter of 1998.
