Transport minister instructs High Speed 2 chairman to research ‘crucial’ scheme

Transport minister, Lord Adonis has opened the door to a high speed rail line running all the way to the North of England and Scotland.
In a letter, he instructed High Speed 2 chairman, Sir David Rowlands, to research the idea.

A planned consultation for 2010 will look at a route from the capital to the West Midlands.

He has requested, by the end of the year, a report outlining a route proposal (including options) from London to the West Midlands and broad corridors for extending the line to the Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, the North-east and Scotland.

Lord Adonis said that there is “no more crucial long-term transport infrastructure project being taken forward at present than HS2”.
