Transport secretary Chris Grayling arrives at Downing Street as the decision on airport expansion is finally announced

The transport secretary Chris Grayling arrives at Downing Street, London, for a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, as the long-awaited decision on which airport expansion scheme should get the go ahead is finally made.

The government chose to back Heathrow, ending more than a year of uncertainty since the Davies Commission came out in favour of a third runway there.

Grayling later said that the decision to back Heathrow expansion was the “best option” and a clear signal that the UK is open for business following the Brexit vote in June this year.
