Construction begins on Rafael Viñoly's Montevideo airport terminal in Uruguay

A 32,000m2 airport terminal designed by Rafael Viñoly is under construction at Montevideo airport in the architect’s home country of Uruguay.

The building is covered by a gently arched roof that stretches 300m in length. Arrivals on the ground floor and departures on an upper mezzanine level both share the large daylit volume below the roof.

The terminal is due for completion in 2009 and is being built by Puerta del Sur, with Carla Bechelli Architects as associate architect, Thornton Tomasetti Group as structural engineer, Luis Lagomarsino & Associates as mechanical engineer and Campiglia Construcciones as cost consultant.
