A new strategy of focusing on infrastructure has helped consultant Mouchel push up turnover and pre-tax profit.
The firm saw profit jump 47%, from £2.4m to £3.5m, and turnover increase 12% from £55.6m to £62.4m in the year to 31 July 2000.

Chief executive Jim Harding said the firm was focusing on a few key clients in sectors such as road and rail.

He said: "We are trying to provide them with a wide range of services, from management consultancy to traditional design." Harding added that he was confident investment in infrastructure would continue. "It's still well set. I don't see current trends changing." Mouchel also said it was focusing on local authority outsourcing work. The company now works for five local authorities with contracts worth about £20m a year, a third of the firm's turnover.

The consultant said it has formed a joint venture with M&E consultant Roberts and Partners to target the growth in high-tech work, including internet server farms.
