Alan Baxter Associates scoops sustainability award for rebuilding Iron Market in Port-au-Prince after 2010 earthquake

Engineer Alan Baxter Associates has picked up the award for sustainability at the Institution of Structural Engineers’ annual Structural Awards.

The firm won for its restoration of the Iron Market in Port-au-Prince in Haiti after it was damaged in the 2010 earthquake. The market has been rebuilt with added solar panel and hurricane resistance elements.

The judges said: “Faced with limited resources and difficult conditions, the structural engineer demonstrated sound yet novel engineering judgment, enabling a severely wounded building to once again stand proud as the central hub of activity.”
