A working group to increase respect for people in construction and to promote sustainability is to be set up by the body promoting the Egan report.

The Movement for Innovation, a joint industry/DETR body that is to run the group, believes it is at least as important as other groups it has set up on education and training, the supply chain and cultural change.

Chairman of the movement's board, Alan Crane, said the respect for people working group would try to identify demonstration projects that show how equal opportunities and working conditions could be improved. He said he would like to chair it.

Speaking at the Construction Industry Board's annual conference in London on Tuesday, Crane said: "Any contractor or design company's best assets is its people, but we have not always provided the best conditions for people. This is a very, very fundamental area that we need to address."

  • Construction minister Nick Raynsford also spoke at the conference, announcing the creation of a taskforce to improve local government construction procurement. He also launched a CIB guide on the millennium bug, saying too many construction-related companies had not checked their systems .
