Share indices in the week to 23 March 2001
Like a plucky boxer, industry shares clambered back to their feet after being punched silly last week.

Unfortunately, the rises were modest: only Countryside Properties enjoyed a substantial gain – up 9.5p. The drops, on the other hand, were severe. The Building 50 index dropped 123 points, with Amec (–10.4% to 381p) and Taylor Woodrow (–10.4% to 180p) among the hardest hit. Housebuilders didn't escape, with the index for the top 15 firms plunging 202 points to 3505. Prowting (–10.6% to 131p), Wimpey (–8.8% to 172p) and Bryant (–7.4% to 207.5p) suffered the biggest falls. EBC, the UK's smallest listed contractor, dropped 12% to 81p despite announcing its purchase of developer ROK.
