Some 35 acoustic reflectors make up the centrepiece of the £7m refurbishment of the much-criticised 20-year-old Barbican Hall in London.
Designed by architect Caruso St John with Canadian acoustician Kirkegaard & Associates, the reflectors are intended to distribute a full-bodied sound more evenly throughout the auditorium. The stainless steel reflectors are coated in Rimex, an acid-etched surface that gives a "shot silk" effect, reflecting warm iridescent colours that vary from gold and bronze to burgundy and rich plum, depending on the angle of light. Citex Project Delivery was project and construction manager, with Max Fordham & Partners as services engineer, Campbell Reith Hill as structural engineer, Carr & Angier as theatre consultant and Northcroft as QS.
