Jib of tower crane became detached from fixing

A Hill Group site in west London has been closed while investigations take place after the collapse of a tower crane earlier this week.

The incident occurred on Wednesday (4 March) at the Barlby Road site, where Hill is building homes on behalf of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

According to the company, the jib of the tower crane became detached from its fixing.

The London Fire Brigade was called just after 10am and two fire engines from the Hammersmith station attended.

According to the Brigade, around 100 people left the site before they arrived.

“We can confirm that no one was injured, and the site was immediately evacuated,” a Hill spokesperson said.

“The HSE are aware, and the site remains closed until the incident is fully investigated, the area cleared and deemed safe for construction to recommence.”

Crane provider Falcon issued its own statement to crane website vertikal.net, which said: “We are aware that around 10am on Wednesday 4th March a luffing jib tower crane collapsed during operation in Kensington.

“There were no reports of any injuries. A thorough investigation has already commenced in conjunction with the manufacturer and a full report will be issued to the industry shortly.”

Barlby Road is part of the Kensington and Chelsea’s new homes programme.

The scheme includes 83 new homes, including 38 for social rent and 10 for key workers, as well as a multi-use sports hall.

Construction began in July 2023 and is due to be completed with residents expected to move in by September 2026.
