The £19m redevelopment of a University of Leicester hall of residence will create 581 rooms.

Work is due to start in the summer on a £19m redevelopment of a University of Leicester student residential estate.

The scheme, designed by architect Goddard Manton, will create a 581-room facility at the Villiers Hall in the Oadby area of the city.

It is due for completion in time for the new academic year in September 2006 and is part of the university's £300m development plan. The project team on the scheme also includes project manager QS and M&E advisor MDA, BWB as structural engineers and Munro Whitten as landscape architects.

University of Leicester deputy director of estate Paul Goffin said the project would fit well in the locality. He said: "The combination and scale of buildings negates the institutional aspect of a traditional hall of residence and provides a community feel to the development."
