Engineer WSP has been appointed to work on the £48m upgrade to the power systems on the West Coast mainline.

The construction contract for phase three of the £300m upgrade plan is being delivered by a joint venture between Alstom, Babcock and Costain.

Jim Fernand, UK rail project director at WSP, said: “With Network Rail’s electrification programme now taking shape this is a strategically important win for WSP.

He added: “Our UK rail team will benefit from our global strength in power and electrification, in particular in Scandinavia.”

The project is expected to complete in 2016.
